Winter Skills Weekend (Cairngorms) - 28/29th Jan 2006

How often do you see the Scottish mountains like this in January? We spent the weekend in the Cairngorms looking at the full range of winter walking techniques. We also spent some time on navigation but it's that bit harder to simulate proper winter conditions when you can almost see to the west coast. On the Saturday we covered ice axe and crampon technique before venturing up onto the plateau to put it all into practice. On the Sunday we used a straightforward gully to get to the plateau before bagging the summit of Cairn Gorm, Britain's second highest mountain, and descending via Coire Cais.
