The crags and mountains of the UK offer some of the most varied rock climbing in the world. The gritstone and limestone edges of the Peak District, with easy access and relatively co-operative weather, offer great opportunities to learn the basic skills before venturing onto the mountain crags or sea cliffs in other parts of the UK. Generations of UK mountaineers have begun their climbing career here and gone on to enjoy rock climbing and mountaineering throughout the world.

The courses that I offer focus on providing climbers with the skills that they need to climb independently. For complete beginners the Introduction to Rock Climbing course is the first step and offers two days of climbing looking at equipment, climbing technique, knots, belaying and the fundamental skills of rock climbing. The Lead Climbing courses teach a full range of technical skills associated with lead climbing and we also aim to develop movement skills and confidence towards leading harder routes. Experienced climbers will benefit from the Self Rescue course which looks at rope techniques for solving problems and rescues.

If you have a particular route in mind or an area that you would like to visit private guiding can also be arranged throughout the UK. Recently I have led clients on The Old Man of Stoer, Skye's Cioch, classic Peak District limestone and Gogarth on Anglesey. Click [ here ] for more information on guiding options.

Introduction to Rock Climbing (Peak District)

The gritstone edges of the Peak Distict are a great place to launch your climbing career. During this weekend you will get to grips with the fundamentals of the sport and importantly, spend plenty of time actually climbing immaculate gritstone on some of the country's most famous crags. We commonly use the eastern edges of Stanage, Burbage, Froggatt and Birchen for this course but sometimes venture over to the western side of the Peak for a day. These crags offer routes from the very easiest to the most difficult and are a superb environment in which to learn the basics.

During the weekend we look at equipment selection, ropework, climbing technique, climbing ethics, traditional climbing and bouldering. By the end of the course you'll have all the skills to climb safely with an experienced climber as a competent second.

Introduction to Rock Climbing (Snowdonia)

This weekend is a great opportunity to make your first moves on rock and do plenty of climbing on some of the best crags in the UK. We spend day one at a single-pitch crag where you will learn the fundamental techniques of climbing, look at equipment, belaying and ropework. On day two we bring in another instructor to give us the option of venturing onto a major Welsh mountain crag or sea cliff for some multi-pitch adventure.

The mountain crags and sea cliffs of North Wales offer some truly stunning climbing and this course has recently taken us to Tremadog, the Ogwen Valley and Gogarth on day 2.

Snowdonia Rock Climbing Week

This five day, intensive week of rock climbing is designed for those who have little or no experience of outdoor climbing. It is very popular amongst climbers who have climbed indoors and who want to develop their skills on rock. The first days are spent at a single-pitch crag looking at fundamental outdoor climbing skills and later in the week we will climb some longer routes on the mountain crags or sea cliffs of Snowdonia. By the end of the week you can expect to be selecting your own routes and leading your own climbs.

Whilst there is a strong emphasis on coaching and technical skills needed to operate in the outdoor environment we don't lose sight of the fact that you're on holiday and aim to make this a fun, challenging and above all enjoyable week of rock climbing in one of the country's finest climbing areas.

Lead Climbing (Peak District)

If you've got some climbing experience this might be the time to move things along and start to lead your own routes. Leading routes safely outdoors demands a wide range of skills and this course will cover them all including: types of protection and their limitations, knots, racking gear for lead climbing, placing and removing gear, setting up belays, communication and stance management using single and double rope systems. Of course, the technical skills are only part of the picture. Confidence plays a vital role in lead climbing and we develop this by looking at leading strategies and tricks that will help you move quickly and efficiently through that crux move!

There's alot to think about at the start of your lead climbing career so why not practice at your own pace under the guidance of a qualified instructor.

Lead Climbing (Snowdonia)

This course covers exactly the same topics as the Peak District course but we are based in Snowdonia. The Welsh rhyolite is particularly leader-friendly with positive holds that tend to inspire more confidence. In addition, it allows us to climb a  straightforward multi-pitch route under the guidance of your instructor.
